Why this matters more now than two years ago

In 2024, creating a convincing fake image required some technical skill. By mid-2026, anyone with a phone and a free app can generate realistic photos of events that never happened, audio clips of people saying things they never said, and written articles that read like they came from a newsroom.

The volume of AI-generated content online has increased dramatically. Not all of it is malicious. Much of it is creative, educational, or commercial. But the same tools that produce marketing images and voice assistants also produce disinformation. The challenge is not that AI content exists. The challenge is telling the difference between AI content that is honest about its origin and AI content designed to deceive.

In Kenya specifically, we have seen AI-generated content appear in WhatsApp groups during politically sensitive periods, fabricated screenshots of "news articles" from outlets like Nation and The Standard, and voice clips impersonating public figures. The Communications Authority of Kenya has flagged this as a growing concern, and media literacy has become a practical skill, not an academic luxury.

The three verification moves

We teach these three habits to every student in our course, and we use them ourselves daily. They are not foolproof, but they catch the majority of AI-generated misinformation.

Move 1: Check the source before the content

Before you evaluate whether a piece of content is AI-generated, ask where it came from. This single question filters out most misinformation, AI-generated or otherwise.

For articles and written claims: Is this published on a verifiable news outlet's actual website (not a screenshot of their logo)? Can you find the same story by going directly to nation.co.ke, standardmedia.co.ke, or the relevant outlet? If the "article" only exists as a screenshot or a WhatsApp forward, treat it as unverified regardless of how professional it looks.

For images: Was this image posted by a verified account with a history of credible posts? Or did it surface from an anonymous account, a forwarded message, or a group where you do not know the original poster? Reverse image search (using Google Images or TinEye) can reveal whether an image existed before the claimed event.

For audio and video: Does this clip appear on the person's verified social media account or official channel? If a public figure supposedly made a statement, check their official accounts before believing a clip shared in a WhatsApp group.

The principle is simple: the easier it is to trace content to a credible, verifiable origin, the more likely it is real. The harder it is to trace, the more sceptical you should be.

Move 2: Cross-reference with a second source

If a claim matters (it would change your opinion, affect your decisions, or prompt you to share it with others), find a second independent source before acting on it.

"Independent" means the second source did its own reporting. Two WhatsApp groups sharing the same screenshot is not two sources. It is one source shared twice. A claim reported by both Business Daily and Reuters, or confirmed by an official government communication and an independent journalist, is genuinely cross-referenced.

For breaking news in Kenya, useful cross-reference sources include: the Kenya News Agency (official government), established newsrooms (Nation, Standard, Citizen), wire services (Reuters, AFP), and verified accounts of relevant officials or organisations on X (formerly Twitter).

If you cannot find a second independent source for a dramatic claim, wait. Misinformation thrives on urgency. Real news gets confirmed quickly.

Move 3: Examine the content itself for AI tells

This is the step most people jump to first, but it is actually the least reliable on its own. AI-generated content is improving rapidly, and the visual or textual "tells" that worked a year ago may not work today. Still, certain patterns remain useful.

For AI-generated text:

  • Overly smooth, generic language with no specific local details. If an article about Kenya reads like it could be about any country with minor word swaps, it may be AI-generated.
  • Confident factual claims without citations or sources. AI tools present fabricated statistics and quotes with the same tone as real ones.
  • Repetitive sentence structures and a consistent paragraph length throughout. Human writers vary their rhythm naturally.

For AI-generated images:

  • Distorted hands, fingers, or small text within the image. AI image generators have improved but still struggle with these details.
  • Oddly smooth skin textures, especially on faces in group photos.
  • Backgrounds that are slightly blurred or contain objects that do not quite make sense (a building with impossible architecture, signs with garbled text).
  • Inconsistent lighting, where the light source on a person does not match the shadows in the scene.

For AI-generated audio:

  • Unnatural pauses or breathing patterns.
  • A slightly "flat" quality to the voice, where emotional range is narrower than normal.
  • Background noise that is too consistent or too absent. Real recordings from Kenyan environments usually include ambient sounds.

For AI-generated video (deepfakes):

  • Lip movements that do not precisely match the words, especially noticeable with Swahili or Sheng pronunciation.
  • Flickering or warping around the edges of faces, hairlines, or jewellery.
  • Eyes that blink too rarely or at unnaturally regular intervals.
  • Inconsistent quality between the face area and the rest of the frame.

Common misinformation patterns in Kenya

Understanding the patterns helps you recognise misinformation faster than examining individual pieces of content.

The fake endorsement

A public figure (a governor, a business leader, a celebrity) appears to endorse a product, investment, or political position. The endorsement appears as a video clip, a quote graphic, or a screenshot of a social media post. It circulates primarily through WhatsApp and Facebook.

Your response: Check the person's official verified accounts. Search credible news sites for coverage of the endorsement. If neither confirms it, the endorsement is almost certainly fabricated.

The manufactured crisis

Images or videos show a dramatic event (a building collapse, a protest turning violent, a disaster) that supposedly happened in a Kenyan location. The content creates strong emotional reactions and urgency.

Your response: Reverse image search the content. Check whether any news outlet is covering the event. Look at the metadata if possible (when was the image actually created?). During the 2022 election period, several "crisis" images circulating in Kenyan social media were traced back to events in completely different countries.

The fake statistic

A claim cites a specific number ("most of Kenyan businesses have adopted AI" or "KES 2 billion lost to AI scams this quarter") without linking to a study, survey, or official report.

Your response: Search for the specific statistic. If it exists in a real report, you will find the report. If the only sources are social media posts and blog articles citing each other, the number was likely fabricated, possibly by an AI tool that generates plausible-sounding statistics.

The impersonation message

A message arrives that appears to be from a bank, a government agency, or a service provider (Safaricom, KPLC, NHIF), asking you to take immediate action.

Your response: Do not click any links. Contact the organisation directly through their official channels. Major Kenyan institutions have official numbers and apps for communication. No legitimate institution sends urgent account actions through WhatsApp forwards.

Building these habits into daily life

These verification habits work best when they become automatic. Here are ways to practice them.

Start with your WhatsApp groups. The next time someone shares a dramatic claim, a surprising image, or a quote from a public figure, take 60 seconds to apply the three moves. Check the source, look for a second source, and examine the content. You do not need to call anyone out publicly. Just practise the verification process internally.

Use the "before I share" rule. Before forwarding any content that makes a strong claim, verify it first. If you cannot verify it in two minutes, do not share it. This single habit, if widely adopted, would dramatically slow the spread of AI-generated misinformation.

Teach one family member. The people most vulnerable to AI-generated misinformation are often those least aware of the technology. Show a parent, an older relative, or a younger sibling the three verification moves. Walk them through one example using a real piece of content from a shared WhatsApp group.

What about AI detection tools?

Tools like GPTZero, Originality.ai, and various browser extensions claim to detect AI-generated text or images. Our honest assessment: use them as one signal among many, not as a definitive answer.

These tools have meaningful false-positive rates (flagging human-written content as AI-generated) and false-negative rates (missing AI-generated content). They are least reliable for short texts and for content that has been edited after generation. They are also generally trained on English text and may perform differently with Swahili, Sheng, or Kenyan English.
